Program overview
Ethnology, simply put, is the study of "people," but it focuses on how different ethnic groups' cultures, customs, and social organizations work. You'll learn core courses like cultural anthropology, ethnographic methods, ethnic identity, globalization and local culture. Studying ethnology in China has a unique advantage: with 56 ethnic groups, the country itself is a natural laboratory. Schools like Minzu University of China and Yunnan University will take you to ethnic minority villages for fieldwork, where you'll live with locals, share meals, and record their stories. This major is perfect for those curious about "why people from different places think differently" — especially those who love traveling, chatting, and writing observation notes.
