Program overview
Geological engineering might sound a bit "hardcore," but it's actually very down-to-earth—simply put, it's about studying how to safely and efficiently use underground space and resources. You'll learn how to find minerals, oil, and groundwater through geological exploration, as well as how to assess risks from earthquakes, landslides, and ground collapses, and design prevention measures. Core courses include engineering geology, rock and soil mechanics, hydrogeology, geophysical exploration, and geological modeling. If you enjoy outdoor work, have a curiosity about Earth sciences, or want to master a skill that's useful anywhere, this major is a great fit. Chinese universities have strong practical advantages in geological engineering—for example, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan/Beijing) and Chengdu University of Technology offer extensive field training bases and national-level labs, giving students hands-on experience with real mines, tunnels, and slope engineering projects.
