Program overview
Environmental engineering may sound high-end, but its core is solving the environmental problems around us: how to make wastewater clean? How to control smog? How to handle waste? You'll analyze water samples in the lab, design treatment processes, and also visit wastewater treatment plants and landfills for field inspections. Core courses include water treatment engineering, air pollution control, solid waste treatment, environmental monitoring, environmental microbiology, and environmental impact assessment. If you enjoy hands-on experiments, don't mind chemistry and biology, and want to learn something that can truly improve the environment, this major is a great fit. Chinese universities have unique strengths in this field—for example, the environmental engineering programs at Tsinghua University, Tongji University, and Harbin Institute of Technology are globally renowned. Many schools have national-level engineering labs and close partnerships with environmental companies, so you'll work on real projects instead of just learning theory.
