Program overview
Mining engineering might sound a bit "hardcore," but it's actually a very practical engineering discipline. Simply put, it teaches you how to extract underground mineral resources (like coal, metal ores, and non-metallic minerals) safely, efficiently, and with minimal environmental impact, and then perform initial processing. At the graduate level, you'll dive into core courses such as rock mechanics, mine pressure and control, mining method design, mineral processing engineering, mine ventilation and safety, and digital mine technology. This major is especially suited for students who are interested in geology, machinery, and engineering, enjoy hands-on practice, and don't mind occasional field trips down into mines. Chinese universities have a strong tradition of hands-on learning in this field—many have their own mine labs or partner with large mining groups to provide real project experience. For example, China University of Mining and Technology and Central South University are at the forefront of smart mining and green mining. If you enjoy solving real-world problems and are willing to work outdoors or in industrial settings, this major can be very rewarding.
