Program overview
Industrial Engineering and Management, simply put, teaches you how to make factories, hospitals, logistics centers, and even internet companies run more efficiently, cost-effectively, and with less effort. It's not just about drawing flowcharts or calculating costs; the core is using operations research, statistics, human factors engineering, production management, and supply chain management to analyze and improve workflows. For example, how to arrange a production line for maximum output? How to design a warehouse layout for fastest picking? How to optimize a hospital registration system to reduce waiting times? These are the daily tasks of an industrial engineer. In terms of coursework, you'll study operations research (mathematical modeling and optimization), quality management (Six Sigma, statistical process control), production planning and control, logistics and supply chain management, human factors engineering (studying the best human-machine interaction), data analysis and decision-making. Many Chinese universities, such as Tsinghua, Shanghai Jiao Tong, and Huazhong University of Science and Technology, have strong industrial engineering departments with deep collaborations with manufacturing, logistics, and internet companies, giving students opportunities to work on real projects. This major is especially suitable for those who enjoy problem-solving, are sensitive to numbers, and have some engineering background (e.g., mechanical, electrical, computer science). If you have a management undergraduate degree but strong math and logic skills, you are also welcome to apply.
