Program overview
Anthropology and World Ethnic Studies is, simply put, the study of "people" and "culture." You'll learn about the lifestyles, beliefs, and social structures of different ethnic groups, and how they adapt to the modern world. Core courses include Cultural Anthropology Theory, Ethnographic Methods, World Ethnography, Cross-Cultural Communication, and Applied Anthropology. Many Chinese universities have unique strengths in this field, such as Minzu University of China and Yunnan University, because China itself has 56 ethnic groups, offering rich fieldwork resources. You'll also have access to research on ethnic groups along the "Belt and Road" countries—a key focus for Chinese universities in recent years. This major suits students who are curious about people, enjoy travel and in-depth interviews, and don't mind writing long reports. If you're willing to live in a village and immerse yourself in local life, you'll find it a rewarding experience.
