Program overview
Chinese Ethnic Studies is a research direction within ethnology, focusing on the history, culture, society, and interactions of China's 56 ethnic groups. Simply put, it studies how the big family of the 'Chinese nation' formed, how different ethnic groups live and develop together, and contemporary China's ethnic policies and practices. Core courses include: Ethnological Theory, Chinese Ethnic History, Ethnographic Methods, Linguistic Anthropology, Ethnic Policies and Regulations, and Cultural Heritage Protection. Many Chinese universities (such as Minzu University of China and Yunnan University) have deep expertise in this field because China itself is a multi-ethnic country with abundant fieldwork resources—you can conduct field research in Miao villages in the southwest, Uyghur communities in the northwest, or pastoral areas in Inner Mongolia. This major suits students interested in cultural diversity and social integration, especially those who want to deeply understand Chinese society or compare their own country's ethnic experiences with China's.
