Program overview
Integrated Circuit Science and Engineering, simply put, is about how to pack billions of transistors into a fingernail-sized chip and make them work efficiently. This major covers the entire chain from chip design, manufacturing processes to packaging and testing. Core courses include digital/analog integrated circuit design, semiconductor physics and devices, microelectronics processes, EDA tool principles, embedded systems, etc. If you have an undergraduate background in electronics, physics, or materials, enjoy hands-on experiments, and are curious about the microscopic world, this major will suit you well. Chinese universities have unique strengths in this field—for example, Tsinghua, Fudan, and the Institute of Microelectronics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences all have national-level laboratories, with close collaborations with companies like Huawei and SMIC, giving students access to cutting-edge tape-out opportunities.
