Program overview
Nanoscience and Engineering is essentially about studying the "big" knowledge in the "tiny" world. You'll design new materials and devices at the atomic and molecular levels—like making phone batteries last longer, enabling drugs to precisely target cancer cells, or doubling the efficiency of solar panels. Core courses include Nanomaterial Synthesis and Characterization, Nanoelectronics, Nanobiotechnology, and Fundamentals of Quantum Mechanics. In lab sessions, you'll use "black tech" equipment like scanning tunneling microscopes and atomic force microscopes to manipulate individual atoms. This program is perfect for students who are curious about physics, chemistry, and biology, and enjoy hands-on experimentation. Chinese universities have invested heavily in this field—for example, Tsinghua, Peking University, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences have top-tier nanoresearch centers. Many labs boast world-leading equipment and maintain close ties with industry—your research projects might directly come from the needs of Huawei or CATL.
