Program overview
The International Chinese Language Education program teaches you how to teach Chinese as a second language to foreigners. You might think: I'm a foreigner myself—isn't it strange to study this? Actually, the opposite is true—many international students choose this major because they already know their own language and culture, and can deeply understand Chinese language and culture, becoming Chinese teachers who best understand the needs of both sides after graduation. Core courses include Modern Chinese, Introduction to Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition Theory, Chinese Teaching Methodology, Cross-cultural Communication, and Chinese Culture Overview. You'll also learn how to design classroom activities, correct pronunciation, and use games to teach grammar. Chinese universities have a unique advantage in this field: many have real international student language programs where you can attend classes, intern, and even try teaching on your own. This major suits students who enjoy interacting with people, are passionate about language teaching, and are willing to delve into Chinese culture. If you are patient, good at communication, or have teaching experience (e.g., as a tutor), you'll find it especially easy to learn.
