Program overview
The Primary Education program, simply put, teaches you how to be an excellent primary school teacher. But don't think it's just about 'looking after kids'—you'll study child psychology, curriculum design, classroom management, subject-specific teaching methods (Chinese, math, English, science, etc.), as well as practical topics like educational technology and special education. Core courses include 'Child Development and Educational Psychology', 'Primary School Curriculum and Instruction', 'Primary Chinese/Math Teaching Methods', 'Classroom Management', and 'Educational Research Methods'. Chinese universities place a strong emphasis on practice; many have affiliated primary schools or partner schools, allowing you to start observing classes and giving trial lessons as early as your sophomore year, and even participate in after-school service programs. This major is ideal for those who love children, are patient, and enjoy sharing knowledge in fun and engaging ways. If you're interested in educational equity, rural education, or bilingual teaching, many Chinese normal universities (such as Beijing Normal University, East China Normal University, and Nanjing Normal University) offer specialized tracks, like 'generalist teacher' training, which prepares you to teach multiple subjects.
