Program overview
The subject teaching (History) major, simply put, teaches you "how to make history classes interesting." Unlike pure history, which only studies what happened in the past, it focuses more on transforming that knowledge into classroom content that students can absorb and remember. Core courses include History Teaching Theory, Special Topics in Chinese and World History, Educational Psychology, Curriculum Design and Evaluation, and Modern Educational Technology. You'll also learn how to analyze textbooks, design lesson plans, simulate teaching, and even intern at middle schools, standing on the podium for real. Chinese universities have a clear advantage in this field: many normal universities have affiliated middle schools or partner schools, providing ample practice opportunities. For example, the history education programs at Beijing Normal University and East China Normal University arrange internships for international students in international departments or bilingual schools, accumulating cross-cultural teaching experience. This major is especially suitable for students who are passionate about history, enjoy interacting with people, and are willing to share knowledge. If you have a research interest in a specific historical period (such as the Silk Road or modern Chinese history) and can explain it clearly in Chinese or English, that will be a big plus.
