Program overview
Archaeology is not just about digging for treasure—it's a discipline that reconstructs human history through material evidence like pottery shards, bones, and architectural sites. You'll learn how to locate sites in the field, carefully excavate artifacts using tools, and analyze them in the lab (e.g., carbon-14 dating, DNA analysis). Core courses include Field Archaeology, Chinese Archaeology (from the Paleolithic to the Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties), Archaeometry, Artifact Conservation and Restoration, and Archaeological Theory. This major suits students who are curious about history, enjoy hands-on work, don't mind sun and wind, and are willing to spend months in the field. Chinese universities have a natural advantage—China boasts an exceptionally long civilization history and abundant sites like Xi'an, Luoyang, and Dunhuang. Many universities (e.g., Peking University, Northwest University, Jilin University) operate their own field training bases, giving you the chance to participate in actual excavations.
