Program overview
Area Studies sounds quite sophisticated, but it's actually simple: it's about specializing in a specific country or region, such as Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, etc. You'll learn about the region's history, culture, politics, economy, language, and even social customs. Core courses include regional history, international relations theory, comparative politics, regional economic analysis, and fieldwork methods. Chinese universities have unique advantages in this field, for example, many have 'Belt and Road' research centers that offer fieldwork opportunities, such as projects in Central Asia or Southeast Asia. This major is especially suitable for students who have a strong interest in a particular country or region, enjoy interdisciplinary thinking, and are willing to step out of their comfort zone. If you already know a minority language (like Arabic or Thai), that's even better.
