Program overview
Materials Physics and Chemistry is an interdisciplinary field bridging science and engineering. Its core is understanding how atoms and molecules are arranged in materials and how these structures affect properties like electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and mechanical strength. Simply put, it uses physics and chemistry to design and create better-performing new materials. You'll study foundational courses like solid-state physics, materials chemistry, quantum mechanics, and thermodynamics, along with various characterization techniques (e.g., X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy) and computational simulation methods. There are many lab sessions where you'll operate precision instruments and analyze data. This program suits students who are curious about the microscopic world, enjoy hands-on experiments, and have a solid foundation in math and science. Chinese universities excel in this field, with many boasting national key labs. Institutions like Tsinghua University, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University are strong in nanomaterials, energy materials, and semiconductor materials. Given China's large manufacturing base, there are ample opportunities to transition from lab to factory, exposing you to real-world applications.
