Program overview
Materials Science is a fundamental discipline that studies the composition, structure, properties, preparation processes, and applications of materials. Simply put, it's about figuring out 'what something is made of, how to make it, and what it can be used for.' As a graduate program under the science category, it emphasizes theoretical depth and experimental skills. Core courses include Fundamentals of Materials Science, Materials Physics, Materials Chemistry, Materials Characterization Techniques (e.g., electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction), and Computational Materials Science. You'll learn how to design new materials and optimize the performance of existing ones—for example, making batteries more durable or chips smaller and faster. This program is ideal for students with a strong interest in physics and chemistry, who enjoy hands-on experiments and are willing to 'tinker' in the lab. Chinese universities have strong capabilities in materials science, especially in cutting-edge fields like nanomaterials, new energy materials (e.g., lithium-ion batteries, perovskite solar cells), semiconductor materials, and biomedical materials. Many universities, such as Tsinghua, Peking, Shanghai Jiao Tong, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, have national key laboratories with abundant research resources and numerous projects, offering international students opportunities to participate in high-level research.
