Program overview
Atmospheric science is the study of various phenomena and processes occurring in the atmosphere, from daily wind and rain to global warming. Core courses include synoptic meteorology, dynamic meteorology, atmospheric physics, atmospheric sounding, numerical weather prediction, and climatology. You'll learn to use mathematical and physical models to simulate atmospheric motion, and get hands-on experience with weather radar and satellite cloud image analysis tools. This major is ideal for students who are curious about weather phenomena and enjoy logical reasoning and computer programming. Chinese universities have strong practical resources in this field—for example, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology and Peking University both have national-level meteorological observation stations, allowing students to work with real meteorological data. Additionally, the China Meteorological Administration collaborates closely with many universities, offering plenty of internship opportunities.
