Program overview
Meteorological Technology and Engineering is essentially about learning how to use modern technology (such as radar, satellites, and supercomputers) to observe and forecast weather, and solve real-world problems. Unlike traditional meteorology, which leans more toward theoretical research, this field emphasizes hands-on skills and engineering applications. Core courses include atmospheric physics, principles of weather science, meteorological observation technology, numerical weather prediction, radar meteorology, satellite meteorology, big data and artificial intelligence in meteorology. You will learn how to analyze meteorological data, build observation systems, and develop forecasting models. China has unique strengths in this field, such as the world-leading Fengyun meteorological satellite system, the new-generation weather radar network, and universities like Tsinghua University, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, and Chengdu University of Information Technology, which are strong in meteorological instrument R&D and numerical modeling. This major is suitable for students who enjoy physics, math, and computer science, are curious about weather phenomena, and want to use technology to address practical issues in disaster prevention and mitigation, energy, agriculture, and more.
