Program overview
In simple terms, Cartography and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) teach you how to use computers and satellite data to "draw maps" and analyze geographic problems. You'll study core courses like remote sensing (e.g., observing urban changes from satellite images), spatial data analysis (e.g., predicting flood risks), and map design (making information clear at a glance). Chinese universities emphasize hands-on practice—for example, labs at Wuhan University and Beijing Normal University have real satellite receiving stations and drone equipment, and you'll also get to work with local technologies like the BeiDou Navigation System. This major suits students interested in geography, computers, and data; you don't need to be a programming expert, but learning Python or R will give you a big advantage.
