Program overview
Geophysics is an interdisciplinary field combining physics and earth sciences, with the core goal of "seeing through" the Earth using physical means. You will learn how seismic waves travel through strata, how gravity fields reflect underground density changes, and how electromagnetic fields reveal rock properties. Core courses include seismology, geomagnetism, gravimetry, geoelectrics, and geothermics, along with extensive programming and data processing (Python, Matlab, specialized software). It's ideal for students with a strong foundation in math and physics who enjoy hands-on data analysis and are curious about Earth's mysteries. Chinese universities have unique strengths in this field: for example, the University of Science and Technology of China hosts the National Deep Space Exploration Laboratory; Peking University and Nanjing University have deep expertise in seismology; and the Institute of Geophysics, China Earthquake Administration operates the world's densest seismic network. International students can access real seismic data, oilfield exploration materials, and even participate in "deep Earth" detection projects.
