Program overview
Geochemistry is simply 'looking at the Earth through a chemical lens.' You'll analyze rocks, soil, water, and even atmospheric samples in the lab, using the distribution patterns of elements and isotopes to trace Earth's evolutionary history, mineral formation processes, or assess sources of environmental pollution. Core courses include Fundamentals of Geochemistry, Isotope Geochemistry, Environmental Geochemistry, and Ore Deposit Geochemistry, along with foundational subjects like Petrology, Mineralogy, and Analytical Chemistry. If you enjoy chemistry experiments and are curious about geological phenomena, this major will suit you well. Chinese universities have unique advantages in this field—for example, the Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and China University of Geosciences have accumulated extensive data on ore deposits and deep exploration. Many labs are equipped with advanced instruments, and international students have opportunities to participate in real projects, such as mineral exploration in western China or environmental remediation in the Yangtze River Basin.
