Program overview
Animal and plant quarantine, simply put, is like giving imported and exported animals and plants a health check to prevent the cross-border spread of harmful organisms and diseases. This major falls under the veterinary medicine category within the sciences, but it focuses more on quarantine techniques and management. You will study core courses such as plant pathology, entomology, animal infectious diseases, molecular detection techniques, and quarantine regulations. There are many lab sessions, such as using PCR to detect viruses, identifying pests under a microscope, and analyzing food residues. It's suitable for students who are detail-oriented, patient, enjoy hands-on work, and especially those interested in biosecurity. China, being a major agricultural and trading nation, has a high demand for port quarantine. Many universities (like China Agricultural University and Nanjing Agricultural University) have strong quarantine labs and internship bases where you can work on real cases.
