Program overview
Epidemiology and Biostatistics are the "detective toolkit" of public health. Simply put, epidemiology teaches you how to investigate how diseases "come, spread, and are prevented" in populations—like tracking COVID-19 transmission chains or evaluating vaccine effectiveness. Biostatistics, on the other hand, teaches you to let data speak, extracting patterns from massive health information—for example, analyzing the strength of the link between smoking and lung cancer. Core courses include epidemiological principles, biostatistical methods, study design, and data mining. If you enjoy logical reasoning, are good at math or programming, and have a passion for public health, this major is a great fit. Chinese universities have unique advantages in this field: a large population base and a rich disease spectrum mean you can work with real-world big data (e.g., millions of medical insurance records). Many schools also have joint training programs with CDC and hospitals, offering plenty of hands-on opportunities.
