Program overview
Marine geology is the study of seafloor topography, sediments, structures, mineral resources, and the evolution of the marine environment. Simply put, it involves analyzing seabed rocks, sediments, and geophysical data to understand what happened in Earth's past, what resources exist now, and what risks may arise in the future. Core courses include Marine Geology, Geophysical Exploration, Marine Sedimentology, Marine Geochemistry, and Submarine Structure and Geomorphology. If you enjoy fieldwork, offshore operations, and are curious about Earth sciences and ocean exploration, this major is a great fit. Chinese universities have unique strengths in this field—for example, Ocean University of China, Tongji University, and Zhejiang University—equipped with advanced research vessels (like the "Dongfanghong" series) and laboratories, giving students opportunities to participate in real oceanographic expeditions.
