Program overview
Chemical Measurement Science and Technology, simply put, teaches you how to use various instruments and chemical methods to accurately measure the composition, structure, and properties of substances. For example, detecting whether food additives exceed limits, analyzing active ingredients in drugs, dating artifacts, or even helping police solve crimes—all of these rely on chemical measurement. Core courses include: Analytical Chemistry, Instrumental Analysis (chromatography, mass spectrometry, spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, etc.), Chemometrics, Sensor Technology, Laboratory Management and Quality Control. You'll spend a lot of time in the lab operating high-end instruments like liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and scanning electron microscopes, learning how to design experiments, process data, and eliminate interference. This major suits students who are hands-on, detail-oriented, and enjoy working with data. If you did well in high school chemistry and physics and are interested in "solving real-world problems with technology," this is a great fit. Many Chinese universities (e.g., Xiamen University, East China University of Science and Technology) have strong backgrounds in instrument development and industry collaboration, with advanced lab equipment and joint training programs that let you access cutting-edge testing technologies.
