Program overview
Physical chemistry is an interdisciplinary field between chemistry and physics, studying the physical laws behind chemical phenomena. Simply put, it seeks to understand "why chemical reactions happen," "how fast they proceed," and "what molecules look like." Core courses include thermodynamics, kinetics, quantum chemistry, statistical mechanics, electrochemistry, and surface chemistry. If you enjoy mathematical derivations, are curious about the microscopic world, or want to understand problems in materials, energy, and biology from their roots, this major is a great fit. Chinese universities are strong in physical chemistry—for example, USTC in quantum chemistry, Xiamen University in electrochemistry, and Peking University and Tsinghua University in catalysis and surface science—all with world-class research groups. Many labs are equipped with supercomputing resources, making computational simulations convenient.
