Program overview
Organic chemistry, simply put, is the science of carbon-containing compounds. The medicines you take daily, the synthetic fibers in your clothes, the liquid crystals on your phone screen, and even the vitamins in your body all rely on organic chemistry. This major teaches you how molecules are built, how they react, and how to design useful new substances. Core courses include organic synthesis, spectral analysis, reaction mechanisms, and natural product chemistry. If you enjoy hands-on lab work, are curious about molecular structures, and don't mind the occasional whiff of solvents, this major is a great fit. Chinese universities have notable strengths in organic chemistry—for example, the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (CAS), Peking University, and Nankai University excel in total synthesis of natural products and organometallic catalysis. Their labs are well-equipped, and many research groups collaborate with pharmaceutical companies, giving you exposure to real R&D projects.
