Program overview
Actuarial science is essentially about "calculating risk with math." In this program, you'll study core subjects like probability theory, statistics, interest theory, life insurance actuarial science, non-life insurance actuarial science, and risk models. Don't be intimidated by the name—it's incredibly practical. For example, how insurance companies set premiums, how pensions are designed, and how banks control bad debt risks are all supported by actuarial models. It's a great fit for students with a solid math background, a love for logical reasoning, and an interest in business and finance. Actuarial programs at Chinese universities are often closely tied to the insurance industry. Schools like Nankai University, Central University of Finance and Economics, and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics have strong actuarial programs, with many faculty members having overseas experience or industry backgrounds. Courses use real-world cases and software (e.g., Excel, R, Python). Some universities also collaborate with the Society of Actuaries (SOA) or the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA), allowing you to start taking actuarial exams while still in school—a big plus for your future job search.
