Program overview
This major sounds very 'hardcore,' but its core is actually studying the formulation, properties, and applications of energetic materials like gunpowder, explosives, and pyrotechnic compositions. You'll take courses in chemical thermodynamics, combustion and explosion theory, pyrotechnics, and conduct plenty of experiments—such as testing material sensitivity and power, or designing new pyrotechnic mixtures. Chinese universities have strong military backgrounds in this field, like Beijing Institute of Technology and Nanjing University of Science and Technology, with advanced lab equipment and close ties to defense units. It's suitable for students who are hands-on, interested in the intersection of chemistry and physics, and don't mind occasionally handling hazardous materials (though safety measures are strict).
