Program overview
Botany is the science of plant life, covering everything from microscopic cell structures to macroscopic community distributions, from gene regulation to evolutionary adaptation. Core courses include plant taxonomy, plant physiology, plant ecology, plant molecular biology, and plant genetics. If you love nature, are curious about plants, or want to use scientific methods to tackle real-world issues like food security and environmental protection, this major is a great fit. Chinese universities have unique advantages in botany: for example, the Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Kunming Institute of Botany house world-class herbariums and field stations, while the rich plant diversity in Yunnan, Sichuan, and other regions provides natural laboratories for fieldwork. Many schools also take students to tropical rainforests and alpine meadows for hands-on exploration—not just sitting in classrooms.
