Program overview
Biomedical Engineering (BME) is a "hybrid" major that blends engineering, physics, biology, and medicine. Simply put, it's about learning how to use technology to help doctors diagnose and treat patients, and to aid in rehabilitation. Core courses include: Human Anatomy and Physiology (understand the human body), Signals and Systems (process data like ECG), Medical Imaging Principles (how CT, MRI work), Biomaterials (materials for artificial bones, heart stents), as well as programming and electronic circuits. Many Chinese universities have specialized BME tracks—for example, Southeast University focuses on medical imaging, Huazhong University of Science and Technology excels in biomaterials, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University leans toward smart medical devices. This major suits students who enjoy hands-on experiments and have an interest in life sciences—you don't need to be a medical expert, but you should be able to communicate effectively with doctors.
