Program overview
Data Computing and Applications is a relatively new major, belonging to the mathematics category but with a stronger applied focus. In simple terms, it teaches you how to use mathematics and computers together to process data. Core courses include Mathematical Analysis, Advanced Algebra, Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics, Numerical Computation, Data Mining, Machine Learning, Database Principles, etc. You don't need to be a math genius, but you should be sensitive to numbers and enjoy solving problems with code. Many Chinese universities tailor this major to local industry needs—such as fintech, smart manufacturing, and e-commerce big data—incorporating real-world cases and project-based learning. It's ideal for students who don't want to study pure theory and prefer to gain hands-on skills they can apply immediately.
