Program overview
Biostatistics is the application of statistics in the biomedical field. Simply put, it solves problems in medicine, public health, and genetics through data analysis. Core courses include Probability Theory, Mathematical Statistics, Regression Analysis, Clinical Trial Design, Survival Analysis, and Bioinformatics. You don't need to be a programming expert, but you should be able to handle data with R or Python and understand basic biological concepts—like what gene expression is or what a randomized controlled trial means. This major is especially suitable for two types of people: those who are mathematically inclined but don't want to deal with abstract formulas all day and want to see how data can save lives; and those who are interested in biology but prefer working with numbers over experiments. Chinese universities have a clear advantage in biostatistics: many schools have direct collaborations with pharmaceutical companies and hospitals, such as Peking University, Fudan University, and Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Students have opportunities to participate in real clinical trial data analysis and even get involved in international multi-center research projects. Additionally, China is advancing drug review and approval reforms, creating a strong demand for high-quality biostatistics talent.
