Program overview
Data science might sound high-end, but at its core it's about three things: collecting data, analyzing data, and making decisions with data. You'll learn statistics (like probability theory, regression analysis), programming (Python/R are standard), machine learning (letting computers find patterns on their own), and how to work with databases. Chinese universities have been working hard in recent years—for example, data science programs at Tsinghua, Peking, and Fudan have close partnerships with companies, and courses directly use Taobao's recommendation system and Didi's route optimization as case studies. What kind of students is it suitable for? If you enjoyed logical reasoning in high school math, or have tinkered with web scraping to collect data, this major will be right up your alley. You don't need to be a programming guru, but you should be willing to work with code. Also, many data science labs at Chinese universities have access to real corporate data—such as anonymized data from e-commerce, finance, and healthcare—so you can practice directly in class. This is especially valuable for international students: you can accumulate hands-on experience early.
