Program overview
Optics might sound abstract, but it's all around you—smartphone cameras, fiber optic broadband, laser marking, and even VR glasses all rely on optics. This program will take you from the fundamentals of light, such as geometric optics (lens imaging), wave optics (interference and diffraction), and quantum optics (photon properties), into applied fields: laser principles, optoelectronics, fiber optic communications, optical design, and imaging technologies. Core courses include Physical Optics, Laser Principles, Optical Communication Technology, and Optical Measurement. If you enjoy physics and hands-on experiments (like building optical paths or aligning lasers), and are curious about what light can do, optics is a great fit. Chinese universities have unique strengths in optics: Zhejiang University's optical engineering is a national key discipline, Huazhong University of Science and Technology excels in laser manufacturing, and Changchun University of Science and Technology focuses on optical instruments. Many schools have state key laboratories with advanced equipment and abundant research projects, giving you access to cutting-edge topics.
