Program overview
Theoretical physics is the soul of physics. It doesn't directly conduct experiments but uses mathematics and logic to deduce the underlying rules of nature. At the graduate level, you will dive deep into core courses like quantum field theory, general relativity, particle physics, string theory, and statistical physics. Simply put, it's about understanding "why the world works the way it does." This major is perfect for those who don't mind math, enjoy thinking about abstract problems, and have the patience to derive formulas. If you were the kind of kid who wondered "what is light, really?" or "can time go backward?" then theoretical physics might be your thing. Chinese universities have some strong points in theoretical physics. For example, the Institute of Theoretical Physics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, Tsinghua University, and the University of Science and Technology of China all have active research groups in quantum gravity, dark matter, and high-energy physics. Many advisors have overseas backgrounds, frequent international exchanges, and are friendly to international students. Some schools even offer courses taught in English to ease your transition.
