Program overview
Pharmacognosy is a very "down-to-earth" field in pharmacy—it studies medicines from nature, such as plants, animals, and minerals. Simply put, it's about figuring out which natural substances can treat diseases, how to extract them, how to use them, and how to ensure their safety. Core courses include Pharmacognosy, Natural Medicinal Chemistry, Medicinal Botany, Chinese Materia Medica Authentication, and Pharmacology. You'll learn how to identify medicinal materials, analyze active ingredients, conduct activity screening, and even collect specimens in the field. This major is especially suitable for students interested in plants, traditional medicine, and hands-on lab work. Chinese universities have a natural advantage in this field due to China's long history of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Many universities (such as China Pharmaceutical University, Shenyang Pharmaceutical University, and Beijing University of Chinese Medicine) have strong pharmacognosy research teams, as well as rich medicinal material resources and herbarium collections. International students here can not only learn modern analytical techniques but also gain exposure to real-world applications of TCM.
