Program overview
Optometry is an interdisciplinary field that studies the visual function of the eyes and optical correction. Simply put, it teaches you how to help people see more clearly and comfortably through glasses, contact lenses, visual training, and more. In China, this program typically falls under the category of Medical Technology within the Science discipline, with a four-year duration and a Bachelor of Science degree upon graduation. Core courses include: Fundamentals of Optometry, Fundamentals of Ophthalmology, Refraction, Contact Lensology, Binocular Vision, Low Vision Rehabilitation, Eyeglass Materials and Technology, etc. You will also learn some anatomy, physiology, and optics, but not as extensively as in clinical medicine. Who is it suitable for? If you are meticulous, patient, enjoy interacting with people, and are interested in optics or eye health, this program is a great fit. Chinese universities offer strong practical training in this field, such as Wenzhou Medical University, Tianjin Medical University, and Sichuan University, all of which have excellent optometry programs. Many schools are affiliated with ophthalmology hospitals, allowing you to practice in real clinics.
