Program overview
Applied Bioscience may sound a bit high-end, but its core is actually using biotechnology (like gene editing, molecular breeding, microbial fermentation) to improve crop yields, enhance food quality, and protect the ecological environment. You'll likely study plant physiology, genetics, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and practical courses like crop breeding and plant pathology. There are many lab sessions where you'll do hands-on DNA extraction, gene cloning, and tissue culture. Chinese universities have unique strengths in this field—for example, China Agricultural University's crop genetics and breeding program and Zhejiang University's plant pathology are very strong. Many labs collaborate with companies, giving you exposure to real projects. It's suitable for students who enjoy hands-on work, are interested in plants and biology, and don't mind working in the field or lab.
