Program overview
Grassland science might sound a bit niche, but it's actually deeply connected to our lives, the environment, and even the meat and dairy on our tables. Simply put, this major studies "grass"—from natural pasture on the steppe to urban soccer field turf, and from windbreak and sand-fixing ecological grass to everything in between. Core courses include botany, soil science, grassland ecology, forage cultivation, turf establishment and management, and grass product processing. You'll learn how to make grass grow better, more resilient, and more drought-tolerant, and how to use grass to restore degraded land. If you love the outdoors, are interested in plants and ecology, or want to learn a practical, tech-savvy major that's both down-to-earth and cutting-edge, grassland science is a great fit. China has strong practical advantages in this field, such as grassland research bases in Inner Mongolia, Gansu, and Xinjiang, as well as distinctive grass science programs at universities like Beijing Forestry University, China Agricultural University, and Lanzhou University. Many courses include field trips to the grasslands for surveys, which is a lot of fun.
