Airport Pickup and Campus Transportation Guide
For first-time visitors to China, transportation from the airport to the university is often the most worrying part. Before departure, check whether the school provides airport pickup service, and confirm the date, time, meeting point, contact person, and vehicle identification. If an appointment is required, be sure to submit your flight information in advance as instructed. Upon arrival, if your flight is delayed or baggage takes a long time, promptly contact the pickup teacher or volunteer to avoid them not finding you.
If the school does not offer pickup, plan your public transportation or taxi route in advance. Use map apps to check the distance, estimated time, and cost from the airport to the school, and save the school's Chinese address on your phone and in a paper document. When taking a taxi or ride-hailing car, it is best to use official channels and do not accept vehicles solicited by strangers. If arriving at night, choose a safer and more direct mode of transportation.
Also prepare a contingency plan. Keep your phone charged, activate temporary internet or international roaming, and carry a small amount of RMB cash. Write down the school's international student office phone number, dormitory duty phone number, and emergency contacts on paper in case your phone is unusable. After arriving on campus, first complete check-in or temporary accommodation before handling other matters. Plan your transportation route in advance, and your first day will be much easier.
If your flight arrives late at night, it is best to confirm in advance whether the dormitory has staff on duty, or book a regular hotel near the school. Do not assume you can check in at any time. Inform the school contact of your arrival time to reduce the risk of no one receiving you upon arrival.
When planning your route to campus, also consider the amount of luggage. Public transportation is cheap but transfers may be inconvenient; taxis are more direct but cost more. For your first arrival, prioritize safety, clarity, and minimal transfers, and do not aim for the lowest cost.
