About the university

Northeast Forestry University (NEFU) is a multidisciplinary institution with forestry as its core strength and forestry engineering as its distinctive feature. It is jointly established by the Ministry of Education, the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, and the People's Government of Heilongjiang Province, and is directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education. It is a key university under the national "211 Project" and "985 Project Innovation Platform for Advantageous Disciplines," as well as a national "Double First-Class" construction university. It is a member of the High-Level Industry-Specific University Quality Resource Sharing Alliance and the "Double First-Class" Agricultural Science Alliance, and a pilot institution for the national Excellent Engineer and Excellent Agricultural and Forestry Talent Education and Training Program. Founded in July 1952, originally named Northeast Forestry Institute, it was established based on the Forestry Department of Zhejiang University's College of Agriculture and the Forestry Department of Northeast Agricultural College, and was directly under the former Ministry of Forestry. It was renamed Northeast Forestry University in 1985. In 2000, it was placed under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education. In 2005, it was approved as a key university under the national "211 Project." In 2010 and 2012, the Ministry of Education signed agreements with the former State Forestry Administration and the People's Government of Heilongjiang Province for joint construction of the university. In 2017, it was selected as a national "Double First-Class" construction university. As of December 2024, the university's campus covers 136 hectares, and it also has teaching, research, and practice bases such as Maoershan Experimental Forest Farm (Maoershan Forest Park) and Liangshui Experimental Forest Farm (Liangshui National Nature Reserve), with a total area of 33,000 hectares. It has a Graduate School, 20 colleges, and 1 teaching department, offering 73 undergraduate programs. It has 9 first-level doctoral programs, 2 professional doctoral programs, 18 first-level master's programs, 19 categories of professional master's programs, 10 postdoctoral research stations, and 1 postdoctoral research workstation. It has over 30,000 graduate and full-time undergraduate students, including 19,691 undergraduates and 10,957 graduate students, and over 2,400 faculty and staff, including 1,416 full-time teachers. In October 1952, the Northeast People's Government issued Document No. 2857 (Jiao Zi) to establish Northeast Forestry Institute. On November 20 of that year, it was officially inaugurated as Northeast Agriculture and Forestry College. The institute was established during the national adjustment of colleges and departments, based on the Forestry Department of Zhejiang University's College of Agriculture and the Forestry Department of Northeast Agricultural College, with the Forestry Department of Heilongjiang Agricultural College also merged in. In February 1955, to meet the needs of campus construction, the university formed a construction team for both agriculture and forestry colleges, laying the foundation for the independent construction of Northeast Forestry Institute. On May 1, then-President Liu Chengdong and Vice President Wang Yuming turned the first shovel of soil, marking the beginning of independent construction and frugal operation. On September 12, students from the two departments (Forestry and Forest Industry) of Northeast Forestry Institute moved to the newly built teaching building for classes. In April 1956, the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Forestry decided to separate the two colleges immediately. On May 4, a general meeting was held for the staff of both colleges, and on May 11, the list of the Northeast Forestry Institute Council and the heads of departments and teaching groups was announced; on May 21, the list of heads of administrative units at all levels was announced. Thus, the two colleges officially separated and embarked on independent development. In August 1957, construction of Maoershan Experimental Forest Farm began. Initially, only a few cadres and some teachers and students engaged in production labor built houses, opened roads, conducted surveys and planning, tended and planted forests, and used manpower to plow wasteland for farming, laying the foundation for the forest farm's development. In February 1958, Liangshui Experimental Forest Farm was established. On April 27, the first Party Congress of Northeast Forestry Institute concluded successfully. After the meeting, each branch held discussions and thoroughly reviewed the Party committee's work over the past two years, offering many important opinions for improving Party committee work and strengthening Party leadership. In October, the Dailing Branch was officially established. In October 1968, teachers and students from various departments went to the mountains for "political camping," which was actually a relocation of the school. The school site was set in Dailing, with a liaison office in Harbin. The Forestry Department went to Meixi and Dafeng Forestry Bureaus, the Logging and Transportation Department to Liangshui Forest Farm, the Water Conservancy Department to Nancha Forestry Bureau, the Mechanical Department to Cuilan Forestry Bureau, and the Road Department to Youhao and Shuangzihe Forestry Bureaus for labor. At the same time, the Dailing Forestry Cadre College was merged in, and leadership was transferred to Heilongjiang Province. In 1970, a large number of teachers and cadres went to the countryside, and the university did not formally enroll students for seven consecutive years. In June 1973, upon the suggestion of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the province decided to move Northeast Forestry Institute back to Harbin for operation. On July 10 of that year, it moved back to its original site in Harbin.
