About the university
Guizhou Medical University (GMU) is a university under the "Basic Capacity Building Project for Universities in Central and Western China," a key provincial university in Guizhou, a doctoral degree-granting institution in medicine in Guizhou, a pilot university for the "Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program," a pilot unit for "Clinical Medicine Master's Professional Degree," a pilot institution for the national quality certification of studying in China, a pilot university for the reform of clinical medicine master's professional degree training model, and one of the first batch of bases for the transformation and transfer of scientific and technological achievements in universities. Its predecessor was the National Guiyang Medical College, founded in 1938. In 1950, it was renamed Guiyang Medical College and placed under the administration of the Guizhou Provincial People's Government. It began enrolling master's students in 1978, was approved as a master's degree-granting unit in 1981, approved as a doctoral degree-granting unit in 2003, became a provincial key university in 2006, and in April 2015, the Ministry of Education approved the renaming of Guiyang Medical College to Guizhou Medical University. As of March 2025, the university covers an area of 3,646 mu (approximately 243 hectares). It has 21 teaching units, 4 directly affiliated hospitals, 8 non-directly affiliated hospitals, 12 teaching hospitals, and 135 non-clinical professional practice teaching bases. It offers 49 undergraduate majors. It has 3 postdoctoral research stations, 4 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 1 professional doctoral degree authorization point, 11 first-level master's degree authorization points, and 9 professional master's degree authorization points. There are 1,653 full-time teachers and 30,000 full-time students (including 25,989 undergraduates, 4,500 postgraduates, and 150 international students). During the early period of the War of Resistance Against Japan, the Japanese invaders occupied North China, and cities such as Shanghai and Nanjing fell one after another. Students from the occupied areas became displaced and lost their schooling. A considerable number fled to the strategic rear area of Southwest China. At that time, the Ministry of Education decided to establish the National Guiyang Medical College in Guiyang, Guizhou Province, both to provide continuing education opportunities for refugee medical students and to lay the foundation for medical education in the Southwest. On December 31, 1937, the Ministry of Education appointed professors Li Zongen, Zhu Zhanggeng, Yang Chongrui, etc., as preparatory committee members, and appointed Li Zongen as the chairman of the preparatory committee. In July 1947, President Li Zongen was transferred to become president of Peking Union Medical College, and the Ministry of Education appointed Professor Zhu Maogen as president of the National Guiyang Medical College. At that time, Guiyang Medical College was one of only nine national medical colleges in the country. On November 15, 1949, Guiyang was liberated, and the faculty, staff, and students celebrated. On November 25, the Cultural and Educational Takeover Department of the Municipal Military Control Commission sent Fan Maoxuan from the Health Department as military representative and Zhang Zuliang as military liaison to take over Guiyang Medical College. On February 3, 1950, the Cultural and Educational Takeover Department ordered that Guiyang Medical College be placed under its direct management.
