About the university

Tsinghua University, commonly referred to as "Tsinghua," is located in Haidian District, Beijing. It is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, jointly built by the Ministry of Education and Beijing Municipality, and is also a central government-administered institution. As one of the first batch of national "Double First-Class" (Category A), "Project 985," and "Project 211" key universities, it is a member of the C9 League, Song League, China University Presidents' Association, Association of Pacific Rim Universities, and Asian University Alliance, and is hailed as the "Cradle of Red Engineers." Tsinghua University traces its roots back to Tsinghua College, founded in 1911, which was renamed Tsinghua School in 1912. It was renamed National Tsinghua University in 1928. In 1937, following the outbreak of the full-scale War of Resistance against Japan, the university moved south to Changsha and formed the National Changsha Provisional University together with Peking University and Nankai University. In 1938, it relocated to Kunming and was renamed the National Southwest Associated University. After the war, the university gradually restored or established new departments in natural sciences, humanities, medicine, and economics and management, and set up a graduate school and a school of continuing education. Following the nationwide restructuring of higher education institutions in 1952, it became a multi-disciplinary polytechnic university. In 1984, it established a graduate school and the School of Economics and Management. In 1999, the Central Academy of Arts and Design was merged into Tsinghua, forming the Academy of Arts and Design. In 2012, the Graduate School of the People's Bank of China was merged to become the PBC School of Finance. In 2018, the Shenzhen International Graduate School was established. In 2022, the Weixian College and the National Center for Excellence in Engineering Education of Tsinghua University were founded. As of December 2024, the university covers an area of 482.84 hectares, with a building area of 3,588,000 square meters (excluding the Shenzhen International Graduate School and affiliated hospitals). It comprises 32 schools, 54 departments, and 12 colleges, offering 93 undergraduate programs and 28 dual-degree programs. It has 69 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 70 first-level master's degree authorization points, and 52 postdoctoral research stations. The university has 3,882 full-time faculty members and a total student enrollment of 62,496. The total value of teaching and research equipment assets is 14.084 billion yuan.
