About the university
Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Chengdu University of TCM), abbreviated as Chengzhongyi, is located in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. It is a university jointly established by the Ministry of Education, the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the People's Government of Sichuan Province. It is a national "Double First-Class" construction university, selected for the National Higher Education Discipline Innovation and Talent Introduction Base, the Sichuan Provincial Higher Education "Double First-Class" Construction Gongga Plan, the first batch of National Clinical Teaching and Training Demonstration Centers for Traditional Chinese Medicine, the first batch of National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Practice Bases, the provincial Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation Demonstration Base, and the provincial Demonstration University for Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform. It is among the first institutions in China authorized to confer doctoral and master's degrees in traditional Chinese medicine, and among the first pilot units for professional degree programs in clinical medicine (master's and doctoral levels). It has developed into a high-level university of traditional Chinese medicine with distinctive features, centered on traditional Chinese medicine disciplines, supported and coordinated by related medical and health disciplines. The predecessor of Chengdu University of TCM was Sichuan National Medical College, founded in 1936. In 1954, it was renamed Chengdu Chinese Medicine Advanced Study School, and in 1956, Chengdu College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was established on the original site of the school. In 1978, the university became one of the first institutions in China authorized to confer doctoral and master's degrees in traditional Chinese medicine. In 1985, it was designated as a provincial key university by the People's Government of Sichuan Province. In 1995, it was renamed "Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine." From June 2013 to June 2014, the university was selected twice for the Sichuan 2011 Plan. In August 2021, it was included in the first batch of Sichuan Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection and Inheritance Bases. As of March 2025, Chengdu University of TCM covers an area of approximately 1,800 mu. It has 20 colleges and 39 undergraduate programs. It offers 4 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 31 second-level doctoral degree authorization points, 8 first-level master's degree authorization points, 67 second-level master's degree authorization points, and 3 postdoctoral research stations. The university has 21,396 full-time undergraduate students, 4,416 master's students, and 950 doctoral students. In 1936, represented by Li Sichi, renowned traditional Chinese medicine practitioners in Sichuan founded Sichuan National Medical College, which was affiliated with the Sichuan Branch of the Central National Medical Institute of the Republic of China. The school aimed to revitalize traditional Chinese medicine and cultivated generations of TCM talents. In 1954, based on the foundation of Sichuan National Medical College, the Sichuan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Provincial People's Government established the Chengdu Chinese Medicine Advanced Training Class at Waijinguanyi in Chengdu, later renamed "Chengdu Chinese Medicine Advanced Study School," to train TCM talents and conduct research and organization of TCM academics. In 1955, it moved to Sidao Street in Chengdu. In 1956, the State Council approved the establishment of four traditional Chinese medicine higher education institutions in the east, south, west, and north of China. Sichuan National Medical College was designated as one of the first four sites for TCM higher education. On July 5, the Sichuan Provincial Health Department established the Preparatory Office for the Construction Committee of Chengdu College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and on the basis of the original Chengdu Chinese Medicine Advanced Study School, Chengdu College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was founded. This was the first state-run TCM higher education institution in Sichuan's history. In September of the same year, the inaugural class of students held their opening ceremony at the Sidao Street campus, with Li Sichi serving as the first president. All former students of Sichuan National Medical College became the core faculty. In 1957, the Affiliated Hospital of Chengdu College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was approved for establishment. In February 1958, Chengdu Chinese Medicine Advanced Study School was officially merged into Chengdu College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The original Sidao Street campus was handed over to the Affiliated Hospital, and the college moved to No. 13 Xinluo Road, outside Tonghuimen, Chengdu, the former site of Chengdu Medical School, which is now the Shi'erqiao campus. In November 1981, with the approval of the State Council, Chengdu College of Traditional Chinese Medicine became one of the first institutions in China authorized to confer doctoral and master's degrees. In 1985, the college was designated as a provincial key university by the People's Government of Sichuan Province. By 1994, Chengdu College of Traditional Chinese Medicine had conducted multiple rounds of professional TCM higher education.
