About the university
Wuhan Textile University (WTU), located in Wuhan, Hubei Province, is a full-time regular institution of higher education under the administration of the Hubei Provincial Department of Education. It is a teaching and research university with engineering as its main focus, covering seven disciplines: science, engineering, humanities, law, economics, management, and art. It is a university selected for the Hubei Province 'Domestic First-Class Disciplines' construction project, one of the top ten fashion schools in China, a university under the Basic Capacity Building Project for Universities in Central and Western China, and a university implementing the Excellent Engineer Education and Training Plan. The predecessor of Wuhan Textile University was Wuhan Textile Engineering Institute, founded in 1958. The institute was originally under the leadership of Wuhan city but was suspended after four years. Meanwhile, Hubei Light Industry School was founded in 1958 in Wuchang, under the Hubei Light Industry Bureau, and also suspended in 1962, resuming enrollment in 1970. In 1978, with approval from the State Council, Wuhan Textile Engineering Institute was reestablished based on the textile major of Hubei Light Industry College, under the dual leadership of the China Textile Industry Ministry and Hubei Province, with the ministry as the primary authority. The institute moved to the Nanhu campus in 1981. In 1998, it passed the Ministry of Education's undergraduate teaching evaluation and was placed under the joint administration of the central government and Hubei Province, with Hubei as the primary manager. In 1999, it was renamed Wuhan University of Science and Engineering, and the Hubei Provincial Foreign Trade School was merged in. In 2002, the university began expanding its scale, merged with Hubei Foreign Trade School, and started construction of the Yangguang campus, which was officially put into use in 2004. In 2003, the university was granted the right to confer master's degrees. In 2005, it took over the administration of Hubei College of Finance and Economics, integrating its personnel, finances, and assets. In 2010, it was renamed Wuhan Textile University. In 2011, Hubei College of Finance and Economics was formally merged in, and the university was selected as a university implementing the Ministry of Education's 'Excellent Engineer Education and Training Plan'. In 2012, it became one of the first batch of universities under the national 'Basic Capacity Building Project for Universities in Central and Western China'. In 2018, it was selected as a university for the Hubei Province 'Domestic First-Class Disciplines' construction. In 2021, it became the first provincial university in Hubei to independently cultivate academicians. In 2022, the discipline of Textile Science and Engineering was selected as a key construction discipline for first-class disciplines among provincial universities in Hubei. In January 2023, it was approved for its first '111 Plan' discipline innovation and talent introduction base. As of October 2024, the university has three campuses: Yangguang, Nanhu, and Donghu, covering an area of over 2,000 mu (approx. 133 hectares). It has 20 colleges (departments), 3 research institutes, and 70 undergraduate programs. It offers first-level doctoral degree authorization in Textile Science and Engineering and Design, 16 first-level master's degree authorization disciplines, and 15 categories of professional master's degrees. It has over 2,200 faculty and staff members and more than 24,000 full-time students.
