About the university
Kunming Medical University (KMU), located in Kunming, Yunnan Province, is the largest higher medical institution in Yunnan integrating teaching, medical care, and scientific research. It is under the administration of the Yunnan Provincial Department of Education. The university is a key institution in the national 'Basic Capacity Building Project for Universities in Central and Western China' and a Yunnan first-class discipline construction university. It has been selected for the Ministry of Education's 'Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program' pilot and the National College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program. KMU serves as Yunnan's international medical talent training base, is among the first batch of universities authorized to recruit international students under the Chinese Government Scholarship, and is a founding member of the South and Southeast Asia Medical Education and Healthcare Alliance. The predecessor of Kunming Medical University was the Medical Specialized Course of Donglu University, founded in 1933. It became an independent institution in 1956, named Kunming Medical College. In 2012, it was renamed Kunming Medical University with approval from the Ministry of Education. It was among the first batch of universities in China authorized to grant master's degrees in 1981, designated as a provincial key university in 1993, authorized to grant doctoral degrees in 1998, and merged with Yunnan Medical College in 2010. As of January 2026, the university has three campuses: Chenggong (main campus), Renmin West Road, and Pingzheng, covering a total area of 1,480 mu. It comprises 18 schools and departments, offering 36 undergraduate programs. It has 5 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 2 professional doctoral degree authorization points, 8 first-level master's degree authorization points, and 7 professional master's degree authorization points. The university has 6,236 staff members (1,652 on the main campus and 4,584 in directly affiliated hospitals) and 23,730 full-time students. In 1933, the private Donglu University was renamed Yunnan University, and a medical specialized course was added, with one classroom and six simple laboratories. In 1937, at the invitation of Xiong Qinglai, Professor Fan Bingzhe, a French-trained medical doctor, led the establishment of the Medical School of Yunnan University. On September 16, the Medical School of Yunnan University was formally established on the basis of the medical specialized course, with Professor Fan Bingzhe serving as dean and professor of surgery. It initially offered only a medical program with a six-year curriculum, one classroom, and six simple laboratories. In 1941, to meet clinical teaching and internship needs, 12 bungalows were converted from the former Yunnan University internship factory site outside the inner city gate to establish the Affiliated Hospital of Yunnan University. By the end of 1949, the Medical School moved from the Wancuiyuan site of Yunnan University to its affiliated hospital, renovating existing buildings into offices, laboratories, and staff dormitories. The school also took over the Gammai Hospital donated by the former French Consulate in Kunming, merging the main and branch hospitals at the former Gammai Hospital site on Xunjin Street to form the Affiliated Hospital of Yunnan University Medical School. In 1950, the school began enrolling five-year undergraduate students. From 1951 to 1955, the Central Ministry of Health sent 20 graduates from advanced medical teacher training classes in Beijing and from Sichuan, Hunan, and other regions to work at the school.
