About the university
China University of Petroleum (East China) is located in Shandong Province. It is a full-time public undergraduate university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, jointly established by the Ministry of Education, five major energy enterprise groups, and the People's Government of Shandong Province. It is a national key university, a member of the national "Double First-Class" initiative and the "211 Project," and a participant in the High-Level Industry-Specific University Quality Resource Sharing Alliance. It has been selected for the 985 Project Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform, the 111 Project, the Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program, the National Typical Experience University for Graduate Employment, the National Demonstration University for Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform, and is a member of the Sino-Russian Engineering University Alliance. China University of Petroleum originated from the Beijing Petroleum Institute, established in November 1952. In November 1969, the institute moved to Shandong and was renamed East China Petroleum Institute in January 1970. In June 1981, the Beijing Graduate Department of East China Petroleum Institute was established. In February 1988, the institute was renamed the University of Petroleum, and based on the Beijing Graduate Department, the University of Petroleum (Beijing) was established, forming a relatively independent two-campus structure: University of Petroleum (East China) and University of Petroleum (Beijing). In January 2005, the university adopted its current name. As of October 2025, the university covers a total area of over 5,000 mu (approximately 333 hectares), with a building area of over 1.3 million square meters. It has 16 teaching colleges (departments), 16 first-level doctoral degree authorization disciplines, 7 self-established second-level doctoral degree disciplines, 6 self-established interdisciplinary doctoral degree disciplines, 4 types of professional doctoral degree authorization, 34 first-level master's degree authorization disciplines, 16 types of professional master's degree authorization, 57 undergraduate programs, and 13 postdoctoral research stations. The university has 1,746 faculty members, over 19,000 full-time undergraduate students, over 12,000 graduate students, and over 800 international students. On May 17, 1952, the Central Ministry of Education's "Plan for the Adjustment of Departments and Colleges of National Higher Education Institutions (Draft)" indicated that a petroleum institute would be established in Beijing in 1953, and in 1952, a petroleum engineering department would be temporarily established at Tsinghua University. In October, the Petroleum Administration Bureau established the "Beijing Petroleum Institute Preparatory Working Group," and the Ministry of Fuel Industry and the Ministry of Higher Education jointly submitted a comprehensive plan to the Central Cultural and Education Committee and the Central Financial and Economic Committee for the establishment of the Beijing Petroleum Institute. In January 1953, based on the Petroleum Engineering Department of Tsinghua University and integrating relevant faculty and resources from Peking University, Tianjin University, and Dalian Institute of Technology, the first petroleum higher education institution in the People's Republic of China—the Beijing Petroleum Institute—was established. It was under the Ministry of Fuel Industry and was one of the "Eight Major Colleges" in Beijing. That year, it enrolled 600 students, with 600 undergraduates and 100 graduate students transferred from Tsinghua University's Petroleum Department to the Beijing Petroleum Institute. On May 29, the Ministry of Education's "Plan for the Adjustment of Departments and Colleges of National Higher Education Institutions in 1953" explicitly stated that the Petroleum Department of Tsinghua University would become the independent Beijing Petroleum Institute. On May 21, 1981, the East China Petroleum Institute submitted a request to the Ministry of Petroleum and the Ministry of Education to establish the Beijing Graduate Department of East China Petroleum Institute. On June 22, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Petroleum jointly approved the establishment of the Beijing Graduate Department at the original site of the Beijing Petroleum Institute, with 9 majors, and enrollment began that year. The Beijing Graduate Department was under the leadership of the East China Petroleum Institute. The original buildings of the Beijing Petroleum Institute had been occupied by various units, and teaching facilities were damaged. On October 8, 1981, the East China Petroleum Institute submitted a request to the Ministry of Petroleum Industry to select an alternative site in Changping District, Beijing. On February 27, 1988, the East China Petroleum Institute was renamed the University of Petroleum, gradually forming a two-campus structure in Shandong and Beijing. In June 1989, the China National Petroleum Corporation, in its "Notice on Several Issues Concerning the Operation of the University of Petroleum," officially used the names "University of Petroleum (Beijing)," "University of Petroleum (East China)," "University of Petroleum Beijing Petroleum Management Cadre Institute," and "University of Petroleum Guangzhou Training Department" (later known as University of Petroleum (Guangzhou)).
