The former Wuhan Transportation University originated from the National Maritime Vocational School established in 1946, was renamed Wuhan Transportation University in 1993, and was affiliated with the former Ministry of Communications. The former Wuhan Automotive Polytechnic University originated from the Wuhan Institute of Technology established in 1958, was renamed Wuhan Automotive Polytechnic University in 1995, and was affiliated with the former China National Automotive Industry Corporation. As of November 2024, WUT has three campuses: Mafangshan, Yujiatou, and Nanhu, covering an area of nearly 4,000 mu (about 267 hectares), with a total building area of 1,953,000 square meters. Its four modern libraries house over 4.16 million books. The university comprises 26 schools, offering 102 undergraduate programs.
