About the university

Guangxi Medical University, located in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, is a university jointly established by the National Health Commission and the People's Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It is designated as a key institution for building a domestically first-class university in its category during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. The university is one of the 22 medical schools established early in China, one of the first 30 universities approved by the Ministry of Education to offer undergraduate clinical medicine programs taught in English for international students, and one of the first eight medical schools in China to enroll international students and students from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan (overseas Chinese). Founded in 1934 as Guangxi Provincial Medical College, it was renamed Guangxi University Medical College in July 1936, Guangxi Military Medical School in February 1937, Guangxi Provincial Medical and Pharmaceutical College in April 1939, and restored to Guangxi Provincial Medical College in September of the same year. In 1940, it moved to Guilin. In November 1949, it was renamed Guangxi Provincial Medical College, and in 1953, it became Guangxi Medical College. It moved back to Jintou Village, Nanning in 1954. It began enrolling master's students and international students in 1978, obtained the right to confer master's degrees in 1981, doctoral degrees in 1984, and started enrolling doctoral students in 1988. In 1992, with the approval of the autonomous region government, it was renamed Guangxi Medical University, and in May 1996, the Ministry of Education approved the name change. In May 2020, it became a university jointly built by the autonomous region government and the National Health Commission, and in 2021, it was designated as a key institution for building a domestically first-class university in its category during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. In July 1934, the provincial government appointed Ge Shaolong as the dean to prepare for the establishment of Guangxi Provincial Medical College. After selecting a campus, hiring professors, drafting an organizational outline, conducting entrance exams for new students, and setting up an affiliated hospital, the first batch of six-year undergraduate students was enrolled in October. On November 21, Guangxi Provincial Medical College was officially established, becoming one of the earliest 22 undergraduate medical schools in China. In April 1939, the school was renamed Guangxi Provincial Medical and Pharmaceutical College, and in September of the same year, it was restored to Guangxi Provincial Medical College. After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan, the school and its affiliated hospital moved several times, first to Tianyang and then to Guilin. In July 1946, the school moved to a new site on Qixia Road in Guilin. After the founding of the People's Republic of China in October 1949 and the liberation of Guilin on November 22, the school was renamed Guangxi Provincial Medical College. In 1978, the school began enrolling master's students and international students, becoming one of the first eight medical schools in China to accept international students.
